Small Streams
(Late June, July-August)

When the water temperatures start to creep upwards in the main rivers and become questionable for fishing, we head for the many small streams and tributaries scattered throughout the Rangeley Region.  These places have a constant flow of cold water and almost all of them contain a population of native brookies.  The fish are generally small, ranging from 4-12” but they make up for their size with their beauty.

Small stream trout are non selective but wary.   A handful of basic fly patterns will do the trick in fooling them yet, an upstream approach with short and precise casts are necessary to avoid spooking them.  Streamside vegetation and shady canopies can make for some challenging casting situations.  Having the right gear can help and make these little guys an absolute blast to catch.  Two and Three weight rods in the 6-6 ½’ lengths are desirable.   Modern and vintage fiberglass rods with a soft full flex action are the perfect tools for this type of fishing.

We recommend that only the fittest of our clients opt for these trips.  Strenuous hiking over remote and high elevation terrain is often required.   These trips are best suited for one angler but a second can come along if both anglers don’t mind taking turns.  Small stream fly fishing is the perfect opportunity for the more adventuresome angler to experience solitude in the beautiful Rangeley Region of Maine.
